FIFA Soccer World Ranking
Every month, FIFA publishes the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings list. The FIFA World Rankings are an ordered list from 1-207 (as of February 2009, there are 207 national teams ranked) that represents a world ranking for each country affiliated with FIFA.
The FIFA World Rankings (revised for the July 2006 rankings and thereafter) are based on a complicated formula that considers five different criteria in the calculation.
- Period of time - results from the last four years are considered, with more recent years carrying a larger weighting in the formula
- Result - 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and zero points for a loss
- Importance of match - On a scale of 1-4, 4 being the FIFA World Cup and 1 being an international friendly match
- Strength of Opponent - based on their position in the FIFA World Rankings
- Regional strength - each of the six confederations are ranked based on their results at the last three FIFA World Cups.
