Gary Cahill's World Cup dream shattered

cahill_185x360_608448aFor the teams languishing at the bottom of the Premier League every game is crucial as they attempt to remain in top flight soccer. And often one player emerges as essential for that survival campaign. For Wolverhampton Wanderers it has been Kevin Doyle, an Irishman very much overlooked at the start of the season cut vital it seems to Wolves’ Premiership survival now. For the other Wanderers, Bolton, it has been Gary Cahill on many occasions. The former Villa player even got himself an England call up and his boss Owen Coyle has been actively lobbying for Fabio Capello to take him to South Africa in June.

Sadly though, it seems that the 24 year old Cahill’s season, and his 2010 World Cup aspirations may be over. After complaining of pain in his arm he was on the bench for Saturday’s game against Fulham. When the arm began to swell he was ordered to the hospital where it was discovered a blood clot had developed in his arm.

This will now put him out for months Coyle told the press. "It is a severe blow for the boy but our main concern is his welfare. We have to make sure Gary is fit and well," said Coyle. "The clot needed to be resolved and in doing that you need the medication. It follows you can't play.”

For Bolton it is a big blow, as Cahill’s play has been one bright spark in what has not been a great season so far at Reebok Stadium. But Owen Coyle made it clear that the club’s only concern was Cahill’s health, "Gary will get the best care available to him. As much as we love football, we will focus on making sure Gary recovers well."
