How the Soccer World is Responding to the Haiti Crisis

11662The crisis in Haiti hit the soccer world hard. A few weeks ago the Haitian Soccer Federation reported to the Caribbean Soccer Federation and FIFA that at least 30 of their members- players, coaches, referees and administrative and medical representatives -died while attending a meeting at the federation's headquarters that collapsed during the quake.

FIFA responded with a $250,000 donation to relief funds in their memory. Jack Warner, the head of the CSF gave $100,000 out of his own pocket and promised that the devastated Haitian soccer headquarters will be rebuilt with help from FIFA, as did South Korean FIFA vice president Chung Mong-Joon.

The game that was played at the Stadium of Light in Lisbon last week helped as well. Names like Kaka, Theirry Henry, Zinedine Zindane and Luis Figo helped attract 65,000 spectators.

The members of Haiti’s national soccer team have all been confirmed as alive and just yesterday it was announced that they will be playing a charity game against a team of German Allstars that will be broadcast live on German TV to aid the relief fund as well.

As a soccer fan one of the ways you can help is by going to soccer.com and purchasing a Haiti United t-shirt (pictured above). These t shirts are being sold for under $17.99 and 100% of the proceeds are being donated to the Red Cross fund to help the thousands of Haitian citizens that need assistance.
