Portugal made their first FIFA World Cup appearance in 1966, impressively finishing third. They were fourth in 2006 but a spotty qualifying campaign for the 2010 competition had many thinking that Portugal might not make it to Johannesburg after all.  They defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina in the UEFA playoffs, after finishing second in their group, to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
