Terry is Out, Rio is In

John_Terry_493722aWith one press statement Fabio Capello ended a week of worldwide speculation and announced he has indeed decided to take Chelsea defender John Terry’s title as England captain away.

It was known that Capello intended to make a decision today, ever since the FA decided that the decision would be solely his earlier in the week. In his statement he said, "After much thought I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry."

What now then, with the World Cup just a few months away? Later in his statement Capello said "When I chose John Terry as captain, I also selected a vice-captain (Rio Ferdinand) and also named a third choice. There is no reason to change this decision.”

So will Ferdinand take the armband? After having been out injured and having put in some shabby international performances some questioned if he would even make the first team. He has also been in the news himself this week, challenging an FA ban for on field misconduct. Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard are players many fans want to see take Terry’s place, but all signs point to Rio as captain with Gerrard taking the vice captaincy.

What this will do to the England teams morale remains to be seen. Their next game is a friendly against Egypt on March 3rd which Terry is still expected to play in. Whether Wayne Bridges plays too remains to be seen as well. He is due to make his first Manchester City start after a long spell out due to injury this Saturday.
